New Zealand: Rotorua & Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Located on the North Island, Rotorua is a major tourist destination - known as a spa town and major tourist resort since the 1800s.  The city is known for its geothermal activity, and features geysers, hot thermal springs, and hot mud pools. This thermal activity is sourced to the Rotorua caldera (a caldera is a cauldron-like volcanic feature usually formed by t collapse of land following a volcanic eruption), on which the city lies.

The name Rotorua comes from Māori, the full name being Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe; roto means lake and rua two - Rotorua thus meaning 'Second lake'.
